An Attempt for Public Facilities Digital Media for Bus Shelter It is no meaningful for a product if the design isn't attractive even though the product has many functions. Customers always see the design first than functions. This bus shelter is decorated with an up-to-date digital design, contrary to existing bus shelters that are dark and simple. Currently, public facilities are made only for convenience and its functions. But the demands for the beautiful design are growing so there are designed facilities on the street. The bus shelter in front of Galleria Department Store in Apkujeong is one of such examples. The bus shelter is a part of Urban Gallery project to make the city as a product which was done by Gangnam-Gu office to upgrade the quality of civil life. 'Changing Words', name of the bus shelter, is designed by Jang Hyejin through the contest. She made the bus shelter a digital medium work to complement Apkujeong's special character of no. 1 fashion street in Korea. She said, "The area is one of the highly fashion street in Korea. You can see the refined and modern looks. Considering these special characters, I designed the bus shelter to be harmonized with the area and also considered the splendid lights of Galleria Department Store." She used LEDs for the new visual. Jang said, "The results are different according to LEDs or colors. I used the best quality LEDs for the new visual. I had to consider the eco-friendly product as it is public facility and LEDs are ideal because the electricity consumption is low." As she said, LEDs were well-matched to the area and gave a luxurious look, and also the bus shelter is well harmonized with the front media wall of Galleria Department Store. With the 27 color combinations with LED lights and panels, this bus shelter has a colorful light effect and the typography animation effect from the sensationally designed panel. LED board to shoot the letters is designed a sensational infinite form. 2 tempered glasses and 2 acrylic plates which have geometrical patterns are allocated in a row to display a layered look. LEDs at the board's outline add a splendid lighting effect. With those tools, the bus shelter has a modern look. Sin Hojae, manager of Predict Ltd. and the installer said, "We tried to express the designer's intention with a limited budget. There were several mistakes on the process and tempered glass and acrylic plates were the result." LED board displays messages which encourage to overcome the global recession are cycled. The letters on the LED board are composed of the nature-related keyword such as river, tree, flower, star, heaven, rainbow, sky, and ocean and psychological contentment related like love, dream, hope, promise, memory, truth, pleasure, and comfort. The keywords are split and made a certain word to make the meaning remarkable. Ms. Jang said, "Those are words that people take sincerely if he/she lives in the city. I wish they are cured a while when they see the words." The cabinet of LED board's size is width 200 X height 200mm and LED elements are assembled in 16 rows to each width and height. Each bus shelter has 2 LED boards and each board has different standards to connect 5 or 6 cabinets. This bus shelter considers not only a design but also convenience and function. It shows the stations name more easily to see and station map is placed on the side for a better visual. This bus shelter provides joy and freshness as it is a new attempt to apply a digital medium to public facilities.
